Ramirez returns to lineup after missing 2 games
July 27, 2008
BOSTON – Manny Ramirez returned to the Red Sox lineup Saturday after missing two games with what he said was a sore right knee.

Boston manager Terry Francona said he spoke with Ramirez after results of MRIs done on both knees Friday “came back fine.” Francona said he knew Friday night that the slugging left fielder would start the second game of the series against the New York Yankees.
He didn’t say if the team disciplined Ramirez, who was scratched from Francona’s original lineup on Friday after the player reported for the game and told bench coach Brad Mills about his right knee.

(CNN) — Randy Pausch, the professor whose “last lecture” became a runaway phenomenon on the Internet and was turned into a best-selling book, died Friday of pancreatic cancer, Carnegie Mellon University announced on its Web site.

Pausch, 47, a computer science professor, delivered the lecture, “Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams,” at Carnegie Mellon in September 2007, a month after being told he had three to six months to live because his cancer had returned.
The lanky, energetic Pausch talked about goals he had accomplished, like experiencing zero gravity and creating Disney attractions, and those he had not, including becoming a professional football player.
Man Stole Miami-Dade Buses, Continues On Routes
July 26, 2008
18 year old James L. Harris is charged with three counts each of third-degree grand theft and burglary of an occupied conveyance, WPLG-TV reported.

According to Miami-Dade Police, Harris would take the buses from the Miami-Dade Transit bus depots, and drive around in route, picking up and dropping off passengers, and even return the buses at the end of the day.
“Police said Harris didn’t raise any suspicion because he was dressed like a Miami-Dade Transit employee. Police said he also didn’t steal any bus fare.”
MILWAUKEE (AP) — If Brett Favre plans to show for the Green Bay Packers’ training camp, he’ll need permission from the NFL. And as of Friday afternoon there was no sign he had petitioned the league for reinstatement.
A person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press that the letter, which must be filed with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, had not been received as of late Friday afternoon. The person requested anonymity because league and team officials were withholding comment until Favre actually filed his letter.
The step is considered a formality, but an important one: Favre can’t return until Goodell receives and approves the request.
The NFL Network reported Friday morning that Favre told Packers general manager Ted Thompson he plans to report to training camp and could file his reinstatement letter as early as Friday, a move perhaps designed to force the team to quickly trade the three-time MVP.
Speculation on a potential new home for Favre has centered on Tampa Bay, but the New York Jets also are emerging as a potential trade partner for the Packers. Jets quarterback Chad Pennington said Friday that general manager Mike Tannenbaum told him the team has talked to the Packers about Favre.

Hammer drops at last: FCC opposes Comcast P2P throttling
July 26, 2008
The Comcast P2P saga has come to its final chapter as a majority of FCC commissioners today voted to sanction the company. The FCC’s Internet Policy Statement now sports some unexpectedly sharp teeth.
July 25, 2008 – 09:13PM CT – by Nate Anderson
“Once FCC Chair Kevin Martin announced his support for sanctions against Comcast, penalties looked inevitable. The two Democrats on the Commission, long supportive of network neutrality, seemed set to vote along with Martin and punish Comcast for its P2P “delaying” techniques; late this afternoon at FCC headquarters, they did, and a majority has now spoken.”
